Porthole
Let ChatGPT use your Mac's files and terminal, like Claude Code.
Porthole is a free macOS tool made by Virat Kaukuntla that lets a normal ChatGPT chat work on your computer. It reads and searches the folders you share, edits files and runs terminal commands, and every change pops up on your Mac for you to allow or deny first. It connects through ChatGPT's Developer mode as an MCP app, over a secret link that stops working when you close it.
What it does
- Read, search, edit and create files, and run terminal commands, from a ChatGPT chat
- A native macOS approval popup for every change, showing the exact diff or command
- Shares only the folders you choose, and never shares keys, passwords, .env files or browser data
- A secret 256-bit link through a Cloudflare tunnel, closed the moment you quit
- Read-only mode, an allow-everything mode for trusted sessions (risky commands still ask), a live dashboard and a full action log
- One-line installer and a porthole command
